Foto Friday #19 – Winter Wonderland

Well, my friends, Friday is finally here. It’s been a busy, long week. More snow. The blog outage. The cold.

Let’s just say I’m ready for spring.

But before that happens, I’m going to enjoy the beauty of the snow. Because there is something magical about those big snowflakes falling from the sky and sticking. Unless it’s a blizzard. There isn’t anything pretty about a blizzard.

Let’s begin shall we…

Barn 4 WM

My new camera had finally arrived. I couldn’t wait to get out there and play with it. Learn everything possible about it.

I was thrilled to hear snow was in the forecast for the next day. The first snow of the year. And I was going to be at my home away from home. The barn.

And it was on to seeing what I could capture.

I’ve always enjoyed the first snow of the year. Something about the way the snowflakes fly around and cover everything in a blanket of white. And this day was no exception. And I so happy to have my camera with me to capture it.

But let me be clear. I’m over winter. Just not the beauty of it.

Foto Friday #18 – The View

“It’s Friday, Friday, Gotta get down on Friday.”

Oh sorry. You caught me singing there. But it’s FRIDAY! And Rebecca Black’s catchy, albeit terrible, Friday song always pops into my head.

It also means it’s Foto Friday! I always look forward to today. I love sharing one of my photos each week. Plus it means it’s almost the weekend.

Let’s begin shall we…

One of my favorite things to do is drive around aimlessly with my camera in tow. For me, it’s relaxing. Scouting out new spots to shoot. Seeing what kind of creativity a spot can ignite.

On this particular day, it was our first day of our staycation. We didn’t have the money to travel that summer. We decided to take a week off and just kick back. Explore some of our local attractions. On our first day, we took a drive. Right up the Maine coast. We ended up in Kittery Point.

We saw a historic sign for a Fort. I wanted to see what it was all about. We found a parking spot, climbed out of the car, and treked up a dirt path. When we got to the top, we were greeted by views of the mouth of the Piscataqua River. Boats filled the left side, while the right side was quieter. It was a warm, sunny day. Clouds filled the sky.

We climbed to the top of Fort McClary, pleasantly surprised with the views we had at the top. We toured the old fort, which is now a museum, taking in the architecture and the history.

And then we stopped at one of the small windows.

And the view was breathtaking.

And I was reminded of the beauty of where I live. And how in just a short drive, I am able to find views such as this. I didn’t feel like I was in Maine anymore, but transported to another state all together.

Everyday, we may take advantage of the beauty that surrounds us. We’re used to it. It’s not new to us.

Take a moment and look at your surroundings in a new way.

Find the beauty. It’s there. I promise.

Foto Friday #17

Ahh. It’s Friday again. One more week closer to spring, warmer weather and Vegas! Since I’m dreaming of warmth on this bitter day in New England, my photo for today’s Foto Friday is just what I feel like staring at today.

Let’s begin shall we…

San Diego Sunrise2 WM

I’m sitting on my balcony, drinking my morning coffee and enjoying a good book. I’m awake before the rest sunny San Diego.

It’s quiet. There is no traffic. Just the sound of the rolling waves, crashing on the beach.

The cool morning breeze rushes through the palm trees, causing the palms to rustle and dance. The breeze is refreshing; clear and fresh.

The sun is just starting to peek over the horizon. The sky is a beautiful shade of cotton candy pink.

The seagulls began to wake and fly through the sky.

I stop reading.

It’s too hard to read on the is perfect morning. Instead, I kick back with my coffee (and camera) and enjoy my first morning waking on the west coast, making sure to memorize everything about it.

Question: What does this photo bring to mind?

Foto Friday #16

It’s time for Foto Friday again. I missed the last couple of weeks due to the holidays, but we are back on track with it.

Today’s photo is one that I just adore.

Let’s begin shall we.

Sunflowers 20 WM copy

Macro photography amazes me. I love how it provides you with the ability to get up close and personal with almost any object.

I love how you can see ever tendril of the center of the sunflower.

I love how you can see the pollen all over the bumblebee’s head and body.

I love how you can see his adorable fuzziness.

I love how you are able to see the pattern in his wings.

I love how this photo reminds me of a lovely late summer day, the sun shining and the air warm.

I love how it shows the simplicity of nature at work.

What do you love about this photo?

Foto Friday #15

Foto Friday is changing. Yes, I will still be sharing some of my favorite personal images, however, instead of a series, or a theme, it will be just one photo. And what I will share is a possible story behind it, or an idea, or the emotions or feeling it might evoke in me. It will be a day where I can share something from my other passion, photography.

Let’s begin shall we.

100

Pure happiness and joy. That’s what I feel looking at this photo.

It brings me back to a day where I traveled to another continent, and a country, that I never thought I would visit. As I stepped foot on the pavement of the old seaside village of Asilah, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the same ocean I look out on at home, I felt alive. Cars whipped by us, camels were calling out to one another on the beach as they carried tourists around, and smells wafted through the air as the residents began to prep their evening feasts for Ramadan.

Looking down this alley reminds me of the simple beauty that we witnessed. We were surrounded by white-washed walls with brightly painted windows and doors, beautiful mosaics, and the shadows of palm trees shrouded us. The white walls kept the kasbah cool, despite the sun beating down on us. The architecture was unlike anything we ever saw, and the details embedded in the ground amazed us all.

I wanted to get lost in there. I wanted to explore every nook and cranny, and photograph every glorious detail. I wanted to sit on the stoop on the right and read a book; say hi to all those wandered by. Immerse myself in the beauty. I never wanted to leave Asilah.

But as I left that beautiful alley, to explore the next, followed by the rest of the kasbah, I reminded myself that this place would always remain. And I could one day reunite with Asilah.

I want to know – what comes to mind when you look at this photo?

Foto Friday #14 – Scenes of Newburyport

Newburyport, Massachusetts is my hometown. I was lucky to grow up in such an incredible place, a place that my entire family and previous generations has grown up. I like to joke that I’m a third generation townie… however, it could be more like 6th generation.

Growing up, I took for granted what a special place Newburyport is. Like any high-schooler, I wanted out. After four years of college in the western part of the state, I realized that there was nothing better than my little hometown. And as I get older, it has become one of my favorite places to photograph.

From Maudslay State Park, to the waterfront, to the downtown area, to Atkinson Common, and everything in between, there is no lack of subjects to capture.

For today, I decided to share some of my favorite photos taken in and around the Newburyport area. My hometown, as I see it.

Enjoy.

Foto Friday #13 – Sunflowers

It’s probably quite obvious that one of my favorite things to photograph are flowers. One flower in particular that I love? Sunflowers. They have always been one of my favorites, and I’m extremely blessed to live very close by to a very amazing sunflower field that is planted by Colby Farm each year.

Colby Farmstand, next to where the sunflower field is located,  is a local, farmer-run farmstand in Newbury, MA. There is nothing better than supporting the local businesses, and I love doing so. Whenever I have a chance, I love popping in for their fresh produce and seeing what other fun finds they have.

The sunflower field is a beautiful sight, and I look forward to seeing that field of yellow every September. Below are some of my favorite photos I have taken there; most of these were from 2011-2012, and the field has only gotten larger and more beautiful.

To help support the re-planting, and the pure amazing-ness of this field, for every photo sold of the sunflowers (no matter the size!), I will be donating 20% of the proceeds to Colby Farmstand. Most of the photos are linked directly to my Etsy Shop. But if you like a picture that is not linked, just let me know!

Enjoy!

Foto Friday #12 – Pink!

In case you didn’t know this, my favorite color is pink. I love pink. My iPhone case is pink, my MacBook case is pink, the neoprene case covering my MacBook and MacBook case is pink, my camera strap is pink. And half my wardrobe is pink. I’m definitely a girly-girl!

So it’s no surprise that when I’m taking photos, I’m drawn to anything pink. Pink flowers, pink sunsets, pink buildings…..

So, here a some of my favorite pink photos! I’m sure some are repeats, but now my favorite pink ones are all in one spot.

Foto Friday #11 – Black and White, Round 2

I clearly love black and white photography. I love it so much that in the same month of the first post with black and white photos, I’m doing a second! Except this time, it’s not just a mish-mash of black and white; it’s all flowers.

Enjoy!

Foto Friday #10 – Animals

I love animals. I don’t know really anyone, who doesn’t love animals. But more importantly, I love photographing them. I love capturing them individually. I love capturing a particular element of them. I love capturing their bond with a person. I love capturing their bond with a fellow animal. I just love everything about them.

Today’s Foto Friday is all about animals. I’ve taken thousands of animal-related photographs through the years, mostly of horses. And I had a hard time choosing just a few to share with all of you. So instead of stepping into the way-back machine and digging up some older ones, I figured I would share some of the more recent ones (from the last year) that I’ve taken.

Enjoy!
