Setting Goals

Happy Monday my friends! ….. Just kidding. It’s Tuesday. And yes….I completely forgot it’s actually Tuesday. Long Weekend Problems.

Today, I’m talking about goals. Life goals, fitness goals, pretty much any kind of goal. I’m the type of person who sets a goal, puts her mind too it for about 3 weeks, and then quickly loses motivation because pizza sounds so much better running.

But I know having goals in place can keep one accountable. So with Labor Day behind us, and for some reason summer back in full swing, I decided that it’s time to set some good, attainable goals for the next four months (until the end of 2014).

1. Exercise more. This has been a much-discussed topic in my house for probably…. well, forever. So, it’s time to nip it in the butt and get moving. I go through such spurts with fitness. Insanity for 6 weeks last year (granted, I had to stop because I injured myself… but I could have done other things), Running for about 4 weeks, gym for about 3 weeks, etc. I’m a start and stop kind of fitness person. I want to stop being that kind of person, and start becoming the person who incorporates some sort of activity into their life everyday. It’s not about vanity anymore; it’s about my health. Especially as I close in on the big 3-0.

What am I doing to kickstart this?

For one thing, I signed up for personal training sessions with a good friend of mine who is local. She knows how much I have struggled with my weight and fitness through the years (since high school!) and really wants to help. So next Tuesday, it’s off to a local park for some serious one on one personal training. I’m excited. I’m nervous. I’m anxious. But I know she’s awesome at it, and will push me just far enough beyond my limits to make it count.

What else am I doing?

I plan on going to the gym every morning. Even with personal training twice a week in the evenings. Even if it’s for 20-30 minutes of cardio. Just to keep myself in that mindset. If I don’t go to the gym, then it’s a 2.5 mile walk at lunch. And during the beautiful fall weather, I’ll STILL go for a walk at lunch, even if I worked out in the AM. I need to keep myself moving.

2. Lose 15 pounds. Considering the amount of weight I have to lose (like nearly 60 pounds to my ultimate goal weight), this is minimal. But, it’s a smaller goal. And doesn’t seem so intimidating. I’m giving myself 4 months to lose 15 pounds. That’s 3.75 pounds per month. I can definitely do that. And I’m hoping in the next four months, it ends up being a bit more than that. But I’m focusing on 15. And whatever else happens, happens.

3. Try new things. I’ve always been the type to avoid trying new things because I was intimated. Or I was scared of what others would think of me. But now, I want to push that to the back of mind and start living. I’ve already signed up to learn to Paddleboard. Maybe I’ll consider trying Yoga. Or joining a running group.

4. Run a 5K. This one may not be attainable in the next 4 months. I’ll have to see how I’m doing fitness-wise by October/November. And how the weather is. But if I’m not ready, I’ll run one next year. This has always been on every goal list, bucket list, resolution list, etc. and I really want to focus on achieving it.

5. Blog more. I’ve really tried to be better about neglecting this blog. I have gotten better. But I want to aim to post more things of value. Not just ranting posts. Or posts where I’m trying to be funny. Legitimate posts that people want to read and are interested in what I have to say.

6. Meet my 100 books read goal. I’m SO far behind on this it’s not even funny. I’ve read 58 books this year. I have 42 more to go. That’s 10.5 books per month for the next 4 months to hit my goal. Le sigh…. it’s a good thing I have lots of good books ready and waiting on my nook! I’m currently reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer . LOVE.

7. Cook more. I love to cook. I’m just lazy. Which means we eat whatever is easy. Which usually ends up being take-out. Now that’s not 100 degrees out (except for this week), I plan on cooking more dinners. One, it’s healthier. And two, leftovers. Which are always the best for lunch. We also recently purchased a Ninja, and I’ve been dying to use it. And I haven’t yet. But the first thing I plan on making…. homemade hummus. YUM!

8. Frame some of my photography. And not for my own use. To have ready so that I can start proposing art shows to local places around town. I have SO.MUCH. personal work that I would love to be able to sell, but without really getting it out there, it’s not going to. Yes, I love my Etsy shop, but it’s also not doing what I had hoped. So, it’s time to frame my work and hope I can get it at some local coffee shops around town. Maybe even sell a few pieces during the holidays.

9. Stop worrying so much, and start living. Hence my goals. If you notice, they are pretty generic.

And if I don’t hit them all, oh well. I’m not fretting anymore.

I’m no longer trying to use the gym for my appearance, but rather my health (although the vanity benefits rock too!). I’m not letting my fear or intimidation get to me, and allowing myself to try the things I’ve always wanted to try. I’m not worried about what others thing about this blog, instead I’m writing for me. That’s what this has always been. I’m enjoying reading, as opposed to trying to fill a quota. Yes, I’m trying to reach 100 books, but if I don’t do it this year, I’ll try again in 2015.

Setting goals is simply to help me organize what’s next for me in the coming months. To help keep me focused and know that I’m always doing something to better myself.

What are you doing in the next four months to better yourself?

Foto Friday #7 – Black and White

I’ve loved Black and White photography since I first laid my eyes on it. I love the feelings it can evoke. I love how dramatic it can make a picture feel, even a simple photo can appear dramatic in black & white. It’s simple. It’s elegant. And it goes with anything.

I’ve found myself experimenting more and more with black and white photography in recent years in my personal work. In the past, when I’ve taken a picture of a flower, I focused on the colors of it. Now, I aim to see how it can look when the color is stripped and it’s bones are bared.

Here a few of my more recent, and favorites, from my black and white collection. As always, these photos and more, are available for purchase in my Etsy shop.

Enjoy.

Foto Friday #6 – Macro Flowers

Flowers are one of my favorite things to photograph. I love the simple beauty and elegance of them. I especially love taking photos of them with my Macro Lens. It allows me to get up close and personal, but also provide a different perspective.

For today’s Foto Friday, I’m sharing with all of you four of my favorites that I’ve taken over the years. Enjoy!

What’s Happening

My life has been busy. Like so busy that I kind of forgot I have a blog. Here is the super fast recap.

  • The Etsy shop has been up and running for about 6 weeks. I didn’t realize how much work it was going to be, BUT, I’m loving finally having a way to sell my personal work. If you love flowers, beaches, landscapes and pretty things, then check it out. I’ve had 2 sales in the first 6 weeks (woohoo!) and my goal is at least 10 by the end of this year. Why so low? Because I know Etsy shops take time to get off the ground. If I make 10 sales, I’ll be psyched. If I go over that, I’ll be over the moon.
  • Photo session season has picked up. Which means I’m getting to play with lots of cute babies and families, celebrating lots of love, and just editing away. I moved to a new gallery system, which has been getting some rave reviews, and I’m just overall super busy. I’ve already had several shoots, including my spring mini sessions two weekends ago, with several more on the horizon!
  • My allergies are in full swing (like so many people) and I feel like crap 99% of the time with them. Needless to say, I was lazy and didn’t exercise for a solid two weeks. And I also chose to eat whatever I felt like. I’m back in the exercise groove, and re-starting Couch to 5K for my thousandth time today. I’ll finish it the week I leave for Spain. So it’s a good time frame and a good goal!
  • Stay tuned for a couple of reviews coming on the blog courtesy of SweatPink. I love being part of this community and can’t wait to bring them to the blog!

And that’s about all for now.

Happy Tuesday!

A weekend of relaxation and productivity

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. I certainly did. It was relaxing and productive.

Friday: After work, I headed to the gym and ran. I upped my running time to 15 minutes today and I felt great. My muscles were pretty sore though, so one I got home I indulged in a good stretch before hopping in the shower. It was amazing how much better my body felt after a good stretch. Note to self: Stretch more often. The other half and I got salads for dinner from our favorite pizza shop in town and enjoyed a few beverages.

Saturday: Typical morning for me. Off to the barn I went to clean stalls and enjoy the company of the horses. Once I got him – we headed up to the Kittery Outlets. I wanted to head to the Under Armour Outlet to pick up some more of their HeatGear Running Shirts. I’m obsessed. And thankfully they were on sale for 2 for $30. Added 4 more to my workout arsenal! Now I just need to get some more running pants! After we did our weekly groceries and stocked up on things I needed for my planned cooking frenzy for Sunday.

My only goal for Saturday night was to finish my taxes. In fact, I made it clear to N to not let me do anything else until my taxes were done. He even made dinner during that time (Mexican Taco Bake!).  Once I completed my taxes we watched Frozen (I’m obsessed!) and I got my eryn e photography Etsy shop up and running. The Etsy shop will have all photos from my personal collection (think flowers, landscapes, the beach, etc.)

And now for Sunday.

Sunday was…. a kitchen adventure. I got up early and got a few more things loaded into the Etsy store and then went to get a mani/pedi before the frenzy began. Now, this was a pre-planned frenzy. Knowing N was going to be working all day, I decided to cook dinner and try out a few new recipes.

First up – Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Peppers. I found this recipe on Pinterest and it has easily become a new favorite. To keep it a bit healthier, we made sure to get lean chicken breasts, and low fat ranch dressing and cheese. Obviously not the healthiest meal, but it sure hit the spot!

While those were baking, I started working on Creamy Greek Yogurt Mac and Cheese. Also not super healthy, but definitely a good comfort food. And the Greek Yogurt gave it such a different flavor. Yum! (I brought a little for lunch today….)

After that was done, I went to work on some No Bake Energy Bites. I have to say – these were probably the hardest to make out of everything! However, they are delicious!

My parents decided to stop by during the cooking frenzy, so I took a quick break and threw together a Sugar-Free Banana Cream Pie for my dad. I had the crust and pudding in my cabinet already so it took no time at all. He was pretty excited.

The final meal of the day – Healthy Turkey Chili. I cook this A LOT. We both love it, and it’s super hearty. My decision to make this was super last minute so I was missing the chipotle chilis it calls for, so I improvised. I added jalapenos (1 1/2 cups), sriracha sauce, red cayenne pepper and chili powder (to taste). It gave it an entirely different flavor, but was still yummy. I’m excited to dig into it for dinner tonight!

Enjoy the recipes! I wish I was created enough to come up with these on my own, but thank god for Pinterest.

Feet, Activity, GF and Books – A Round Up

Well hi there!

I figured I would do a little update post today as opposed to a ranting post, a learning post or a post about someone else. I mean, this is after all a look into my world! I mean, I do the other posts because let’s face it, my life is pretty ho-hum every day. I have the same routine for the most part – get up, go to work, go to the gym/work out (if I don’t do it in the AM), eat dinner, go to bed and do it all over again the next day. Hence why I try to throw some different things in the blog!

Update time.

The foot: If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, then you would know that I’ve been fighting a foot injury since September ’13. I was diagnosed with metatarsalgia, a possible neuroma, and finally a stress fracture. After nearly 3 months a boot, and not feeling any better, I moved to see an orthopedic and began following a new treatment plan. He felt it wasn’t a stress fracture and just an overuse injury, and prescribed PT and orthotics. Since I can’t really afford orthotics, I bought regular inserts to help with the issue.

I’ve been in physical therapy for just about a month, and unfortunately, there is has been no improvement. We’ve tried stretching twice a day, heat, ice, ultrasound, elec stim and massage. I get temporarily relief day of, but then the pain comes back. Thankfully (or maybe not…) the pain has localized, and PT is thinking it’s a inflammation issue. I go back to the doctor next week and we can start working on the next steps. I REALLLYYYY don’t want to get into cortisone shots if I don’t have too, so I’m hoping he will suggest something else. I guess we will see! I mean, if he thinks it will help, obviously I’m going to probably do it.

PT
The view from my table this AM.

The good news with all of this is I haven’t been letting the pain keep from being active. I’m still going to the gym, but just doing the elliptical, arc trainer or bike, and still riding when I can (as long as the pain isn’t bad). I think at this point, if I couldn’t be doing something, I would be going crazy. And having the 100 Days of Active is keeping me motivated too!

And that leads me too…

100 Days of Active: So far…. I have completed, 4 days out of the 100. Thankfully I figured out that it was like 110 days to my birthday, so it gave me a couple of days to play with. Unfortunately, I was already negotiating my own goal on day 2…. but now I’m getting into my groove. Today will be day 5 with 104 days until my birthday! I was hoping to ride tonight, but with the foot pain pretty bad today, looks like I’ll be doing my laps at the grocery store with some pilates when I get home!

exercise
Last night’s work out. My goal is always to do a 5K on the elliptical. I’ve been doing them in just about 37 minutes. Last night I did it in 35! (My HRM went a little longer than the workout!)

Gluten-Free: Two words that seem to be everywhere these days. And as of this week, I guess I can add it to the list of things about me too. Yep, I’ve gone GF. Well, I’m trying.  It’s only really day 1, since I ate a ravioli yesterday (and proceeded to die after),

After a lot of trial and error, it appears that I have a sensitivity to gluten. To the point that when I eat things with it, I pretty much feel like I’m dying. So I’m trying to stay away from it. Which is hard. Because I love bread, bagels, crackers, cookies, pizza, calzones, beer…. pretty much all things gluten. But I know if I really do have an intolerance, I’m only going to feel better. So that’s my focus. Thankfully, there are so many good GF foods and recipes out there now… it’s become so common that it’s easy to handle these days. I’m just completely overwhelmed right now, but hoping I’ll feel less that way as the days go on. I know my body already feels less bloated and angry. So that’s a win!

eryn e photography: I never post photo business updates here anymore, but it is part of my world, so here you go. I’m excited for my 3rd year in business and I’m hoping this will turn out to be my busiest year yet. I’m already starting to book up, and I’m excited to expand my client base. Having said that, if you read this and are in the MA/NH/ME area, and are interested in having photos done, I’d love to chat with you! You can visit my website for more information, e-mail me, or leave me a message in the comments and I’ll get back to you. I’m also running mini-sessions on May 4th in Newburyport if anyone is interested (see flyer below!)

Spring-Mini-Sessions-2014
E-mail me if interested and in the area!

Book Goal: I’ve read 18 books out of my 100 goal. I’m on book 19 now. If I keep this up, I’ll definitely make 100 books by the end of 2014. Check one more thing off of my bucket list. I’m currently reading ‘The Man Who Left‘ by Theresa Weir. If you ever want to keep up with things I’m reading, feel free to friend me on GoodReads! My goal on there says I’m behind, but it’s because a couple of books I’ve read I couldn’t find on GoodReads.

Alright, I think that’s good on the updates.

Have a wonderful day!

Foto Friday #1

As part of the ‘reinvented’ blog, I’m always trying to think of new things I can do, besides just write. Since it’s a look inside my world, whether it be books, health/fitness, photography or just my musings of the day, I need to plan accordingly. I’m hoping as I delve deepper into the blogging world, I’ll have a bit more of a schedule for things. But for now, since not a whole lot of new stuff is happening, I decided today would be Foto Friday!

What is Foto Friday you ask?

Foto Friday is going to be a day where I post a random photo from my personal collection of works, or possibly a really cool photo from a past photo shoot, and maybe write a little snippet or something that goes along with it! Maybe it will spark some creativity in me.

Anyways, welcome to the first Foto Friday. My one rule – please don’t take screen grabs of these photos. If you’re interested in any of them, please let me know. :) Also – if you’re interested in seeing more of my work, make sure to like eryn e photography. You can either like it on the side bar, or visit here!

My love for photography began at the beach my sophomore year of high school on Plum Island. To this day, it is still one of my favorite places to photograph, both personally and professionally. I recently had family photos done and my engagement photos done, forever capturing one of my favorite places.

I love black and white photography; while I don’t go black & white unless I feel the picture really calls for it, I just love how it can capture a mood, a feeling or just enhance the effects of a photo. This photo was taken in early August. Summer was starting to wind down, but the weather was still perfect. I was waiting for a client to arrive for their session so I wandered around the boardwalk snapping pictures as I went. I love the depth of field in this. I love how it came out.

Photos can spark a different emotion in every person. For me, the blurred out boardwalk represents the start of summer. It seemed like early June was just upon us and suddenly, it’s just a blurred memory.

Does this photo spark any emotions from you? If so, what?

Overcast Skies & Bright Colors

Welcome to New England. The only place that the temperatures can be in the mid-80s one day and drop into the mid-40s the next. Even though the temperature only hovered around the 40, I did not spend my day huddled inside.

Overcast-Skies

With the spring housing market upon us, we ventured out to six open houses all over the North Shore. Most were up around Amesbury and Salisbury, but we opted for an adventure down to Gloucester and Rockport to check out a couple as well. I took this as an opportunity to see an area of Massachusetts that I have never seen before! Amazing I know since I’ve lived in MA my entire life. Good thing I remembered my camera.

Even though it was cool out (and even cooler at the Rockport coast), today was meant for taking pictures. Overcast skies make for perfect picture taking because it allows all of the  colors around us just popped! This is just one of the many things I learned that I hadn’t known before! Thank you to Kelly Mintz, See Shore Photography for teaching a great class for the last six weeks!

I fell in love with the beauty of Rockport. The quaint feeling of the downtown was whimsical. It almost seemed like we had stepped back in time. I felt like I was no longer on the North Shore, but rather visiting Cape Cod. I can’t wait to go back and spend time there this summer.

Needless to say, we may not have found a house today, but I definitely found some new shoot locations for this summer.
