Foto Friday #19 – Winter Wonderland

Well, my friends, Friday is finally here. It’s been a busy, long week. More snow. The blog outage. The cold.

Let’s just say I’m ready for spring.

But before that happens, I’m going to enjoy the beauty of the snow. Because there is something magical about those big snowflakes falling from the sky and sticking. Unless it’s a blizzard. There isn’t anything pretty about a blizzard.

Let’s begin shall we…

Barn 4 WM

My new camera had finally arrived. I couldn’t wait to get out there and play with it. Learn everything possible about it.

I was thrilled to hear snow was in the forecast for the next day. The first snow of the year. And I was going to be at my home away from home. The barn.

And it was on to seeing what I could capture.

I’ve always enjoyed the first snow of the year. Something about the way the snowflakes fly around and cover everything in a blanket of white. And this day was no exception. And I so happy to have my camera with me to capture it.

But let me be clear. I’m over winter. Just not the beauty of it.

Foto Friday #18 – The View

“It’s Friday, Friday, Gotta get down on Friday.”

Oh sorry. You caught me singing there. But it’s FRIDAY! And Rebecca Black’s catchy, albeit terrible, Friday song always pops into my head.

It also means it’s Foto Friday! I always look forward to today. I love sharing one of my photos each week. Plus it means it’s almost the weekend.

Let’s begin shall we…

One of my favorite things to do is drive around aimlessly with my camera in tow. For me, it’s relaxing. Scouting out new spots to shoot. Seeing what kind of creativity a spot can ignite.

On this particular day, it was our first day of our staycation. We didn’t have the money to travel that summer. We decided to take a week off and just kick back. Explore some of our local attractions. On our first day, we took a drive. Right up the Maine coast. We ended up in Kittery Point.

We saw a historic sign for a Fort. I wanted to see what it was all about. We found a parking spot, climbed out of the car, and treked up a dirt path. When we got to the top, we were greeted by views of the mouth of the Piscataqua River. Boats filled the left side, while the right side was quieter. It was a warm, sunny day. Clouds filled the sky.

We climbed to the top of Fort McClary, pleasantly surprised with the views we had at the top. We toured the old fort, which is now a museum, taking in the architecture and the history.

And then we stopped at one of the small windows.

And the view was breathtaking.

And I was reminded of the beauty of where I live. And how in just a short drive, I am able to find views such as this. I didn’t feel like I was in Maine anymore, but transported to another state all together.

Everyday, we may take advantage of the beauty that surrounds us. We’re used to it. It’s not new to us.

Take a moment and look at your surroundings in a new way.

Find the beauty. It’s there. I promise.

Foto Friday #17

Ahh. It’s Friday again. One more week closer to spring, warmer weather and Vegas! Since I’m dreaming of warmth on this bitter day in New England, my photo for today’s Foto Friday is just what I feel like staring at today.

Let’s begin shall we…

San Diego Sunrise2 WM

I’m sitting on my balcony, drinking my morning coffee and enjoying a good book. I’m awake before the rest sunny San Diego.

It’s quiet. There is no traffic. Just the sound of the rolling waves, crashing on the beach.

The cool morning breeze rushes through the palm trees, causing the palms to rustle and dance. The breeze is refreshing; clear and fresh.

The sun is just starting to peek over the horizon. The sky is a beautiful shade of cotton candy pink.

The seagulls began to wake and fly through the sky.

I stop reading.

It’s too hard to read on the is perfect morning. Instead, I kick back with my coffee (and camera) and enjoy my first morning waking on the west coast, making sure to memorize everything about it.

Question: What does this photo bring to mind?

Foto Friday #16

It’s time for Foto Friday again. I missed the last couple of weeks due to the holidays, but we are back on track with it.

Today’s photo is one that I just adore.

Let’s begin shall we.

Sunflowers 20 WM copy

Macro photography amazes me. I love how it provides you with the ability to get up close and personal with almost any object.

I love how you can see ever tendril of the center of the sunflower.

I love how you can see the pollen all over the bumblebee’s head and body.

I love how you can see his adorable fuzziness.

I love how you are able to see the pattern in his wings.

I love how this photo reminds me of a lovely late summer day, the sun shining and the air warm.

I love how it shows the simplicity of nature at work.

What do you love about this photo?

Foto Friday #15

Foto Friday is changing. Yes, I will still be sharing some of my favorite personal images, however, instead of a series, or a theme, it will be just one photo. And what I will share is a possible story behind it, or an idea, or the emotions or feeling it might evoke in me. It will be a day where I can share something from my other passion, photography.

Let’s begin shall we.

100

Pure happiness and joy. That’s what I feel looking at this photo.

It brings me back to a day where I traveled to another continent, and a country, that I never thought I would visit. As I stepped foot on the pavement of the old seaside village of Asilah, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the same ocean I look out on at home, I felt alive. Cars whipped by us, camels were calling out to one another on the beach as they carried tourists around, and smells wafted through the air as the residents began to prep their evening feasts for Ramadan.

Looking down this alley reminds me of the simple beauty that we witnessed. We were surrounded by white-washed walls with brightly painted windows and doors, beautiful mosaics, and the shadows of palm trees shrouded us. The white walls kept the kasbah cool, despite the sun beating down on us. The architecture was unlike anything we ever saw, and the details embedded in the ground amazed us all.

I wanted to get lost in there. I wanted to explore every nook and cranny, and photograph every glorious detail. I wanted to sit on the stoop on the right and read a book; say hi to all those wandered by. Immerse myself in the beauty. I never wanted to leave Asilah.

But as I left that beautiful alley, to explore the next, followed by the rest of the kasbah, I reminded myself that this place would always remain. And I could one day reunite with Asilah.

I want to know – what comes to mind when you look at this photo?

Foto Friday #9 – Sunsets

In my opinion, sunsets are just one of the most beautiful parts of nature. Depending on the season, the appearance of the sky or the landscape, they can be so different. Whenever we travel, I always make it a point to take in at least one sunset; several if I get the chance! Included below are some of my favorites through the years.

Enjoy!

Foto Friday #8 – Buildings and Architecture

Buildings and architecture can make for some very interesting photos, especially based on how the image is composed. In recent years, I’ve really grown to enjoy taking photos of architecture and old buildings. I like seeing them in new ways and enjoy trying to compose a shot that would be a bit different. Sometimes, I prefer even just playing with the lighting or depth of field to create an interesting image. Below are a few of my favorite buildings from my recent work.

Enjoy!

Foto Friday #5 – {Plum Island}

I love the beach and the ocean. And I was lucky enough to grow up in a coastal town, with multiple beaches just a short drive away. The beach has always been one of my favorite subject matters when it comes to photography. Some of my favorite first photographs I took were with an old film camera on a photography field trip at the beach. And when I feel the need to take off a photo excursion, Plum Island is usually one of my first stops. I tend to stop in the center, but sometimes I take off all the way down to the point.

I love how different Plum Island can look, depending on the season, the time of day, or just mother nature. And that’s why it continues to be one of my favorite subjects.

Foto Friday #4 – {Travel Edition}

In honor of my adventures to Spain, I decided this Foto Friday should be dedicated to the photography from vacation’s past. I’m sure some of these have been seen before, but it’s still fun to dig them out and reminisce! We love to travel (I wish we could do it more than once a year!) and dince I bought my camera in 2011, we’ve been on two trips. The first we flew into LAX, drove the coast and stopped in various places and finally stayed in San Diego. After staying over for a night there, we packed up the next morning and drove to Las Vegas!

And the second trip was in 2012 to San Francisco and Las Vegas. Enjoy!

Weight Watchers Update and Foto Friday #2

Happy Friday all!

Before I jump into Foto Friday, I wanted to do my weekly Weight Watchers update. Today was my weekly weigh-in and I am happy to report I was down 2.8 lbs! Here are the totals so far.

Starting Weight (1/2/14): 199.3

Last Weigh In for WW (1/17/14): 192.5

Current Weight (as of this AM): 192.5

Current Loss to Date: 6.8

My goal is to be down 15 by Valentines Day – just over a month to lose about 8.2 lbs. I think I can do it! Especially getting the gym back in the equation this week.

Okay – now for something I’m hoping to bring back. FOTO FRIDAY! As many of you know, my side profession is a photographer. I have loved photography since high school and began eryn e photography in 2011. While the business has become a lot of amazing families, I still love getting out there and snapping random scenes. Since my camera is currently in the shop for some repairs, I decided to have some fun with my iPhone 5S this AM on my way into work. I edited it with ‘Filtergram‘.

Usually I post a little blurb to go with the photo, but today – I’m not. I want to hear what comes to mind when you look at this photo! And for the record,  I did pull over and stop my car to take this. Always be safe when taking pictures on the road :)
